We then apply a "right hand rule" flattening that hand and holding the thumb perpendicular to the four other fingers. The hand is then turned so that the thumb points along the velocity and the four fingers are aligned with the direction of the perpendicular magnetic field.

"v x B" is then in a direction coming out of the palm. Finally, when this is multiplied by the electron's negative charge, we get a force that is directed sideways back into the screen (green arrow).
