MBE consists, basically, of "spray painting with atoms." For this to work, other atoms must get out of the way. MBE thus requires extremely good vacuums to get rid of almost all of the interfering air atoms.

This system has two "ultrahigh vacuum" growth chambers, one at each end. In the center is the chamber into which wafers are loaded and stored before layer growth.
